Slow Lifestyle Travels

Overrated holiday destinations

I have been thinking –  travelling has always been pictured as something really cool. ‘It was so beautiful there, it was such an amazing place, a place to be (…)’. Well, travelling is in fact a great experience, but it’s not always a pleasure. I made a list of places I think are overrated. I have been there, experienced and I just don’t think they are as worth visiting (as people think). Just to recap – it is my personal opinion, not a travelling agency advert.

1. Dublin, Irlandia / Dublin, Ireland
Stolicę Republiki Irlandii odwiedziłam z okazji St. Patrick’s Day.

I visited the capital of the Republic of Ireland because of St. Patrick’s Day. I had always wanted to see the famous parade and to experience the festival – Irish people having fun on the streets of Dublin. Looking back, the parade was magnificetnt, the Irish people were the nicest ever, bars were overcrowded, but Dublin… didn’t really steal my heart. Browsing through the pictures I took a day after the parade, everything looks grey and boring. The buildings are undoubtedly nice, but something about them is missing.

 2. Kopenhaga, Dania / Copenhagen, Denmark

Kanały i rowery? Owszem, ale żeby wywołać efekt ‚WOW’ potrzeba czegoś więcej.

The city I visited in order to see the Copenhagen Fashion Week in February 2016. Maybe it’s because of my admiration of Amsterdam, maybe it’s because of the shitty weather , but I didn’t really like the capital of Denmark. Well, I definitly won’t put it on my ‘must come back’ list. No way. It was pretty, but not charming. The sights are there, but I have seen them-likes a lot of times. The famous channels and bikes? Yes, but it takes more to cause the ‘WOW’-factor.

I remember I was super excited to see the city of fashion. I couldn’t wait to experience Duomo di Milano! And well, unfortunately, it appeared to be the only interesting object in the whole city. In compare to the other Italian cities (said to be the most beautiful in the world), Milan scores really really bad. The suburban streets literally scare people off, and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele is as overcrowded as London’s tube in the afternoon (see the bloody picture).

4. Bangkok, Tajlandia / Bangkok, Thailand

‚One night in Bangkok’ zupełnie wystarczy.

‘One night in Bangkok’ is more than enough. Despite my negative attitude, I was actually hoping something will surprise me (as if). Well, nothing did. There is literally everything in Bangkok and, as we all know, ‘everything’ means too much.

5. Nowy Jork, Stany Zjednoczone / New York, United States of America

Prawdopodobnie jestem pierwszą osobą, która publicznie krytykuje ‚Big Apple’. Tak, naprawdę  mi się tam nie podobało. Budynki, budynki i jeszcze więcej budynków. Szarych.

I might be the first person to criticize the ‘Big Apple’, but I seriously didn’t like it there. Buildings, buildings and even more buildings. The grey ones. A good tip – if you really need to visit, go visit in the summer (or spring eventually). Along with the -20 degrees even the famous Empire State Building seems to be another grey skyscrapper (which it actually is), but the sun gives a hint of splendid to everything. As for the atmosphere of the city – it is a completely different thing (positive). New York is a place to be, but definitely not because of its sights.

6. Ateny, Grecja / Athens, Greece

Niestety historyczny Akropol to jedyna atrakcja stolicy Grecji. To miasto ma niesamowity potencjał, jednak niewykorzystany.  Ateny wydały mi się niezwykle zaniedbane.

I can’t remember being as disappointed as I was in Athens. The historical Acropolis is the one and only attraction of the Greek capital. The city has such a great potenential, but it remains neglected.
